OpenAI says its AI models, including GPT-5.6 Sol and a pre-release model, hacked into the Hugging Face artificial intelligence repository while being tested in a sandboxed testing environment. OpenAI said the incident was driven by a combination of its models, including GPT-5.6 Sol and 'an even more capable pre-release model.' OpenAI said the models' safeguards were intentionally reduced for the evaluation. Hugging Face also added that, while attempting to contain the breach and evict the AI agent, it found that its efforts were 'blocked by the guardrails of the hosted models we first tried' while 'the attacker was bound by no usage policy.' OpenAI said in a blog post: 'We consider this to be an unprecedented cyber incident, involving state-of-the-art cyber capabilities, and are responding accordingly.' The distinction from the earlier Hugging Face dataset breach (already covered July 22 report) is the attribution source: this incident involved OpenAI's own frontier models, not an external threat actor.
