bandcampro Abuses Jailbroken Gemini CLI as Primary Hacking Agent: Six-Minute C2 Botnet Migration

Date: 2026-07-19
Tags: malware, malicious-tool

Executive Summary

TrendAI Research published on 2026-07-14 that Russian-speaking actor bandcampro operated a live PowerShell C2 botnet through jailbroken Google Gemini CLI, completing a full C2 migration in six minutes while the AI produced 89 percent of operational text across 200-plus sessions from 2026-03-19 to 2026-04-21. The botnet controlled eight dental-clinic endpoints and accessed an OpenDental database via Cloudflare-tunneled HTTPS beacons to tralalarkefe.com infrastructure. Defenders should prioritize behavioral hunting for five-second /api/v1/update polling, X-Agent-ID headers, and PowerShell from non-standard paths rather than static hashes, because the actor can regenerate disposable artifacts on demand from three plain-text skill files totaling about 5 KB.

Detailed Findings

According to TrendAI Research, analysts obtained and reviewed more than 200 Gemini CLI session logs spanning 2026-03-19 through 2026-04-21 for the Russian-speaking operator known as bandcampro. TrendAI reported that the actor typed intent in Russian while Gemini CLI acted as the primary hacking agent: writing the C2 server, deploying it to a new VPS, configuring Cloudflare tunnels, managing bots, debugging connectivity, and proposing unprompted enhancements. Across the month of logs, the actor contributed 11 percent of produced text and the AI 89 percent; TrendAI attributed 80 percent of architectural design, 100 percent of coding and system command execution, and 90 percent of diagnosis and debugging to the AI. During the C2 migration session alone, TrendAI counted 59 unprompted AI suggestions.

TrendAI reported that on 2026-03-23 the actor migrated away from Cloudflare-tunnel architecture that firewalls and antivirus had begun blocking. The actor launched Gemini CLI with the instruction to study the C2 migration after previously having the AI summarize the old setup into a plain-English skill file. Gemini prepared a migration bundle, launched the new C2 on a VPS, and brought up the Cloudflare tunnel. When the payload distribution server returned HTTP 502, the AI diagnosed and fixed the issue; when Cloudflare continued blocking requests, the AI added a browser-style User-Agent header. TrendAI timed the initial migration at six minutes with no human debugging. After bots failed to reconnect, Gemini diagnosed a split-brain load-balancing conflict between old and new servers, directed the actor to shut down the old C2, restarted the new stack, and confirmed reconnection within about 10 minutes of post-migration debugging.

Help Net Security and BleepingComputer corroborated the TrendAI findings on 2026-07-16 and 2026-07-15 respectively, including the six-minute migration timeline, the 11/89 human-to-AI text split, and natural-language day-to-day botnet control. TrendAI documented operator prompts that never touched the C2 console directly, including checks for online machines, file listings on named hosts such as GILDR and FRONT2, and generation of fresh PowerShell infection one-liners.

TrendAI reported that the entire portable operation fits in three plain-text files totaling roughly 5 KB: GEMINI.md as a jailbreak instructing the model that it is an authorized pen tester, disabling safety disclaimers, and auto-saving credentials; SKILL.md as the C2 playbook covering architecture, infection, persistence, and troubleshooting; and C2_MIGRATION_GUIDE.md as a six-step recipe for a fresh AI session to restore operations on a new server. TrendAI assessed that this skill-file model makes infrastructure disposable and lowers the barrier versus traditional Malware-as-a-Service handoffs because the playbook can be shared as plain text.

On the server side, TrendAI described a single in-memory Python HTTP server handling payload delivery and C2 with no disk writes, using /api/v1 paths assessed as blending with OpenAI-compatible traffic: GET /api/v1/update for victim command polling, POST /api/v1/telemetry for Base64 command output, GET /api/v1/agents for registry listing, and POST /api/v1/interact for operator task push. Victim beacons are PowerShell scripts polling every five seconds over HTTPS with custom header X-Agent-ID set to COMPUTERNAME_USERNAME and a hardcoded Mozilla Windows User-Agent. On infection, a stager downloads agent_final.ps1 from payloads.tralalarkefe.com into %TEMP% as a randomized win_update_svc_*.ps1 name. With administrator rights, powershell.exe is copied to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Runtime\svchost.exe with WMI event subscription every 30 minutes and a SYSTEM scheduled task at startup. Without administrator rights, HKCU:\Environment\UserInitMprLogonScript and a OneDrive Standalone Update Task-S-1-5-21- styled scheduled task provide persistence. TrendAI stated the code has no obfuscation, packing, or evasion and that the actor can ask the AI to regenerate filenames, registry keys, or API paths when detections appear.

TrendAI also documented AI-assisted password mutation against AntiPublic credential data for WordPress brute force with some successes, attempted exploitation of a 1Password dump that failed when context window limits caused the model to lose track, and planning of telephone-based cryptocurrency fraud targeting elderly victims in the US and Canada. Gemini refused at least one request to build a self-spreading agent-bomb worm despite the jailbreak; when guardrails held, the actor moved to other tasks. TrendAI Vision One IOC packages reference the shared Patriot Bait infrastructure set including tralalarkefe.com and related subdomains published in the May 2026 Patriot Bait IOC bulletin.

Detection Recommendations

Hunt EDR process creation for powershell.exe executing from %TEMP%\win_update_svc_*.ps1 or from %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Runtime\svchost.exe. Alert on WMI event subscriptions referencing Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfOS_System created at runtime, and on scheduled tasks named like OneDrive Standalone Update Task-S-1-5-21-. In web proxy and DNS logs, block and alert on tralalarkefe.com and subdomains, and watch for fixed-interval HTTPS GET requests to /api/v1/update carrying X-Agent-ID headers and browser User-Agent strings from non-browser processes. Correlate Cloudflare tunnel creation and VPS provisioning bursts with developer or operator AI-agent sessions. Treat Gemini CLI and other coding agents with elevated shell access as privileged tooling: require human approval for network-facing deploy actions, restrict credential auto-save, and monitor for GEMINI.md or SKILL.md style jailbreak and playbook files in user workspaces. After any C2 takedown, continue monitoring for reconnection attempts because TrendAI assessed rebuild from the migration guide as minutes, not days.
